Taking care of your ears this winter

Prevent ear infections this winter

As winter approaches, ear infections are prevalent. Ear infections during the winter months affect both children and adults. There are some tips that you can follow to reduce the risk of suffering from ear infections this year. Taking care of your ears can help you to avoid the pain that ear infections can cause.

Why do ear infections happen more often during the winter?

Ear infections are more prevalent during the winter because of a combination of flu and cold viruses together with cold winds. Adults are more susceptible to fungal infections because of increased humidity while children are more susceptible to upper respiratory infections and bacterial infections because of the cold. When fluid accumulates behind your middle ear, it can cause painful swelling and redness. This is called acute otitis media and may cause you to temporarily experience a hearing loss in the affected ear.

Why do people sometimes feel a shooting pain in the ear?

People who have acute otitis media may have blocked ears or experience ringing. They may also suffer pain that can progress from mild to severe as pus builds up behind the eardrum. Fortunately, there are some preventive measures that you can take to reduce your chances of suffering an ear infection.

Steps to prevent ear infections

People who suffer from problems with their ears year round should make certain to protect their ears from cold winds by wearing scarves or ear muffs. They should also try to keep their ears dry and avoid eating foods that are cold. In general, people can prevent ear infections in the winter by taking the following preventive measures:

  • Cover your ears and wear ear muffs, caps, or scarves;
  • Keep your ears dry;
  • Don’t smoke because it can cause inflammation in the ear tubes;
  • Avoid exposure to second-hand smoke;
  • Exercise regularly and follow a healthy diet;
  • Wash your hands properly before and after you eat; and
  • Shower at least daily if you are prone to suffering ear infections.
