If you’ve ever had trouble understanding someone at a party, speech-in-noise testing is something you might be interested in. In this test, the audiologist presents you with sentences that you have to repeat. You’ll hear the sentences alone and with varying levels of noise that appear to be coming from different locations, such as in front of you and from the sides.

This is a useful test even if your pure-tone audiogram — the test you took with the beeps — turns out to be normal. But it’s also very helpful if you wear hearing aids. Depending on what type of microphone your hearing aids have, you could notice more or less background noise.
